What began as an introduction to stepping on Howard University's campus became a global celebration of rhythm, culture, and tradition.

Howard alumnus C. Brian Williams, founder of Step Afrika!, has spent decades elevating the art of stepping, honoring its African American roots, and inspiring generations through performance, education, and community service.

Now, his acclaimed company returns to Arena Stage with The Fruits of Our Labor, continuing a legacy of cultural storytelling that traces part of its inspiration back to The Mecca.

During Homecoming 2026, Howard University’s annual Lavender Reception brought together students, alumni, friends, and allies to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and advance the pursuit of equity and justice. Featuring a special performance by platinum-selling R&B artist Ari Lennox, the gathering honored the voices and advocates who continue to strengthen Howard’s inclusive campus culture.

Through scholarships supporting student equity advocates, the Lavender Reception carries its mission beyond the celebration, investing in the next generation of leaders committed to a more inclusive world.
