In a cohort study of adults with type 2 diabetes, initiation of GLP-1 therapy was associated with a reduced 3- to 5-year risk of obesity-related cancers, but only relative to insulin or sulfonylureas. There was no significant difference in comparison with metformin or other diabetes medications.

These patterns, the study authors wrote, “may reflect both treatment selection and underlying disease severity: insulin initiators generally had more advanced complications, whereas SGLT2i initiators tended to have fewer individual complications than GLP-1 initiators.” They concluded that the findings “were broadly reassuring regarding oncologic safety but did not support selecting glucose-lowering therapy for cancer prevention.” mdsc.pe/3WOm9aB

Standard glaucoma treatments focus entirely on bringing down fluid pressure inside the eye to spare the optic nerve. So how does a cholesterol pill fit into the picture?

New research in the British Journal of Ophthalmology showed that people who take cholesterol-lowering statins have a lower risk of developing glaucoma. What's more, glaucoma patients already on statins needed fewer interventions — such as surgery or pressure-reducing drops — than those not taking the drug.

The findings offer an exciting glimpse into potential new ways to preserve sight. mdsc.pe/47UfDBF

Sleeping 8 hours, reaching a target amount of deep sleep, improving a smartwatch score, or waking up feeling completely rested: Sleepmaxxing, a trend gaining popularity on social media, promotes maximizing sleep through routines, devices, supplements, and other strategies intended to help individuals fall asleep faster, sleep longer, and sleep more deeply.

Practices associated with sleepmaxxing include maintaining strict sleep schedules, regulating bedroom temperature, wearing eye masks, using smartwatches and smart rings, and taking supplements such as melatonin or magnesium. Other, more controversial approaches, such as mouth taping — sealing the lips with adhesive tape to encourage nasal breathing — raise additional safety concerns. mdsc.pe/4f5QEPt
