In June, María Corina Machado finally made it in person to the 2026 #OsloFreedomForum after years of attending virtually. On stage, she shared her hopes for Venezuela and her plan to return and build a democratic future hand in hand with its people. Machado faced repeated obstacles in her attempts to return home. This September, she was denied entry into Venezuela three times in just 24 hours. Less than six months after her talk in Oslo, and after 10 months in exile, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate has returned to Venezuela.

Will Smith’s decision to continue collaborating with Angola’s regime-backed PR campaign shows why amplifying the voices of those fighting repression matters.

At the Oslo Freedom Forum, we gave Angolan dissident rapper and activist @LuatyBeirao a platform to share his experience of detention, repression, and the fight for freedom in Angola. For Angolans pushing for change, having their stories heard matters.

Celebrities should not lend their credibility to dictatorships. HRF urges @WillSmith2real to end his collaboration with Angola’s corrupt regime and stop helping whitewash its record of repression and human rights abuses.

In 2012, Tutu Alicante took to the stage at the Oslo Freedom Forum to expose corruption and injustice in Equatorial Guinea under Africa’s longest-ruling dictator, Teodoro Obiang.

Today, he’s still exposing how authoritarian regimes use power, money, and influence to shield their abuses.

In the latest episode of The Dissident’s Mic, Tutu examines how regimes use soccer to launder their reputations and distract from corruption and human rights abuses.

Gao Zhen, one half of the Gao Brothers and a 2026 Václav Havel International Prize for Creative Dissent laureate, has been sentenced by the Chinese regime after two years in detention. The Gao Brothers were recognized at this year’s Oslo Freedom Forum for their decades of artistic resistance and willingness to challenge political repression. We stand with Gao Zhen and his family and call for his immediate and unconditional release.

HRF strongly condemns the sentencing of artist Gao Zhen and calls for his immediate and unconditional release. HRF also calls on the international community to hold China accountable for its repression of artistic expression.
