We are honored to recognize and celebrate Dental Hygienist Kelley Sowell, recipient of the ICARE Award for Excellence. Her actions exemplify what it means to put Veterans first and demonstrate an unwavering commitment to compassionate, Veteran-centered care. In a moment when circumstances could have easily called her away, Kelley chose to put the needs of her patient above her own personal plans, demonstrating extraordinary dedication, selflessness, and compassion. Her actions are a meaningful reflection of our ICARE values and the difference one individual can make in the lives of those we serve.

The nomination for Kelley reads as follows:
Dental Hygienist Kelley Sowell of the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System is recognized for her extraordinary Commitment and Excellence in Veteran-centered care. In early September, during a tornado warning and activation of evacuation protocols, Kelley was in the middle of treating a patient and promptly assisted and escorted the Veteran to the safety of the basement, placing the Veteran’s wellbeing ahead of all else. Her calm, decisive actions in an emergency reflect a deep sense of responsibility and the VA ICARE values lived in real time.

Once the all-clear was given, Kelley again chose service over self, electing to remain and complete the Veteran’s care rather than leaving for a planned flight home to care for her ailing mother. She arranged for her husband to pack and pick her up later so that the Veteran’s treatment would not be interrupted, a powerful example of Commitment and Excellence that goes far beyond routine duty. Kelley consistently treats every Veteran as if they were family, willingly adjusting her own schedule, including administrative time, without hesitation to accommodate the needs of those she serves.

Kelley is a strong advocate for her patients and for all Veterans, ensuring they receive both the high-quality treatment and the respect they deserve. Her professionalism, compassion, and unwavering dedication to putting Veterans first embody the spirit of the VA ICARE values and set a standard for others across the organization. For her selflessness during a crisis, her daily commitment to Veteran-centered care, and the example she provides to her colleagues, we offer our sincere and personal thanks to Kelley Sowell for her remarkable service to Veterans and to the VA mission.

Please join us in congratulating Kelley on this well-deserved recognition! We are incredibly grateful for her dedication, compassion, and willingness to go above and beyond for her Veterans and colleagues. Her actions remind us that exceptional Veteran care is not defined by a schedule or a job description, but by a genuine commitment to doing what is right for those who depend on us. Thank you, Kelley, for embodying the VA ICARE values and demonstrating what it truly means to put Veterans first. We are proud to have you as part of our team!
