The Sound of a Losing Culture.

I hear it in the dugout during games. A player strikes out looking on a borderline pitch. He walks back to the bench tosses his bat and starts the script:

"Blue has a flight to catch," or "The sun was right in my eyes."

The coach nods just to stop the noise. The teammates shrug because they do it too.
But the standard of the program just dropped another inch.

You think you’re just "venting." Everyone else sees a player who is too soft to own his failure.

The 3 Lefts Mental Audit:

• The Excuse Subsidy: Every time you blame the umpire, the sun, or the mound you are paying a tax on your own development. If it’s someone else’s fault you don't have to fix anything. And if you don't fix anything you stay exactly where you are Average.
• The "Main Character" Delusion: The sun is hitting the pitcher’s eyes too. The umpire is missing calls for both sides. The game isn't out to get you it just doesn't care about you. Stop acting like the world is conspiring against your batting average.
• The Respect Gap: You want your teammates to trust you in the 7th inning. Then stop acting like a victim in the 2nd. Real leaders don't look for someone to blame they look for a way to adjust.

The game doesn't reward the player with the best reason It rewards the player who makes the most adjustments.

If you want to be treated like an elite ballplayer, start acting like one when things go wrong. High-level players don't have bad luck they have short memories and a plan for the next pitch.
Average players want the world to be fair.
Ballplayers realize the dirt is dirty and they keep digging anyway.
Stop auditioning for the victim role. Nobody is buying tickets to that show.

THE WORST AT BAT OF HIS NIGHT GOT THE MOST PRAISE.

Chased two pitches.
Swung at ball three.
Got jammed.

Bloop single.

“THERE YOU GO!”
“GREAT JOB!”
“KEEP SWINGING IT!”

Next time up.

Gets his pitch.
Barrels it.
Left fielder barely has to move.

Out.

He walks back past the same people.

Nothing.

Dad looks down at the scorebook.
Coach calls the next hitter.
Kid sits down and starts wondering what to change.

What to change?

He just did exactly what everybody’s been asking him to do.

But the garbage swing got a standing ovation.

The good one got silence.

Then we wonder why players would rather get lucky than get better.

Players. Coaches. Parents.

We all say we understand how hard this game is.

Prove it when the right thing doesn’t get rewarded.

Don’t preach “trust the process” if you only clap for the result.

BASEBALL IS A TEAM GAME.

UNTIL SOMEBODY MAKES THE LAST OUT.

Bases loaded.
Down one.

Strike three.

He stands there a second.

Then walks back to a dugout nobodys talking in.

Somebody in the stands says,
“All we needed was a hit.”

He heard it.

He’ll hear it again when he tries to sleep.

The runner picked off in the second?

The cutoff missed in the fourth?

The two hitters who watched the pitcher walk three guys, then swung at the first pitch?

Those got seven innings to disappear.

His mistake got the whole ride home.

Players remember his at bat.
Parents replay it.
Coach brings it up Monday.

We say, “Win as a team. Lose as a team.”

Then let one kid carry the loss out to the parking lot.

The scoreboard counted the whole game.

Why didn’t we?

THEIR PITCHER IS FALLING APART.

WHY ARE YOU PUTTING HIM BACK TOGETHER?

Two straight walks.
Coach coming out.
Bullpen getting loose.

You step in and chase the first pitch in the dirt.

Then another.

Now he’s got an out.
A little confidence.
And somebody warming up can sit back down.

You wanted to be the guy who broke the game open.

You became the guy who kept him in it.

Being dangerous at the plate includes knowing when to leave the bat on your shoulder.

DON’T GIVE A STRUGGLING PITCHER
A TEAMMATE IN YOUR UNIFORM.

IF THE PITCH IS COMING AND YOU’RE STILL ASKING HOW MANY OUTS, YOU’RE LATE.

Two outs. Runner on first.
Ball in the gap.

The runner hesitates.
The cutoff man has no idea where the throw belongs.

The coach is yelling the answer nobody practiced.

Everybody reacts.
Nobody was ready.

Baseball IQ starts before the ball gets hit.

Know the outs.
Know the runners.
Know your job if the ball finds you.
Know your job if it doesn’t.

“BE READY” ISN’T A PLAN.

Ready for WHAT?
