The team is doing radio frequency compatibility testing in South Africa, with the 12m dish that received data from Apollo experiments on the Moon. The dish now supports the next generation of space missions, including our mission to an asteroid.

In building DeepSpace-2, we faced a challenge: how do you vibe test a xenon tank without xenon?

We filled it with a fluid blend approximating xenon’s mass, using a vacuum to avoid trapped air. The tank held pressure and survived the qualification vibration loads. Onward.
