More data does not automatically mean better decisions in sport. AI, wearables, and performance analytics offer powerful possibilities, but their value depends on how we interpret the information, whose experiences the data represent, and how decisions affect the people behind the numbers.

I am excited to share our new article, “Biometric Life: Toward an Integrated Kinesiology for the Algorithmic Age,” published in Kinesiology Review.

In this theoretical article, colleagues from FSU and the University of Kansas examine how digital technologies are reshaping exercise science, sport psychology, coaching, health education, and sport management.

We explore several questions with practical consequences such as:

• Who owns athletes’ biometric data, and who controls how those data are used?
• What happens when algorithmic recommendations overlook individual circumstances or reflect biased data?
• How can practitioners use AI responsibly while preserving trust, autonomy, and human judgment?
For coaches, a central message is that using AI effectively requires the ability to critically evaluate its recommendations and integrate them with knowledge of the athlete, the relationship, and the situation.
We suggest that preparing professionals for this environment requires collaboration across kinesiology, alongside education in AI literacy, ethics, and responsible data use.

For coaches, educators, researchers, and sport leaders, the challenge is to ensure that technological progress serves human development and well-being.

Middle and High School Coaches Needed for Research Study

Are you currently a middle or high school coach, or have you served in that role within the past three years? Want to win up to $1,000?

We are seeking coaches to help develop the Baseline Readiness Inventory for Interscholastic Coaches (BRIIC). The BRIIC is being designed to help athletic directors identify the strengths and professional development needs of newly hired school coaches. You will complete a 10- to 15-minute online survey evaluating the importance and relevance of potential coaching competencies, responsibilities, and readiness indicators. No name, email address, or other direct identifier is requested in the primary research survey.

As a thank-you for participating, you will have the opportunity to enter a separate random drawing to win one of five gift cards: 1 winner will receive $1,000, 2 will receive $500, and 2 will receive $250.

Complete the survey here: fsu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_5a…
