Do DCD hearts from older donors need to be reanimated before transplantation?
Our early @VUMChealth experience suggests they may not.
Published today in @CircAHA : 20 DCD heart transplants from donors ≥40 years using Rapid Ultraoxygenated Recovery (REUP) without preimplant reanimation.
✅ 0/20 severe PGD ✅ 0% discard rate ✅ 281 min median ischemic time ✅ 95% 90-day survival
These early, single-center data challenge the assumption that donor age ≥40 requires reanimation before transplant.
Assessment of Oxygen Delivery and Exchange Across Perfusion Trajectories.
We’re launching this multicenter, outcomes-linked initiative focused on defining physiology-referenced standards for perfusion adequacy across cardiac surgery and ECMO.
It may be time to redefine perfusion adequacy. Our JTCVS study shows that longitudinal oxygen delivery & extraction trajectories—not delivery thresholds alone—are independently associated with morbidity & AKI in CABG. Perfusion is dynamic. #CardiacSurgery#Perfusion#Hemodynamics#STS#ECMO jtcvs.org/article/S0022-…
Pleased to share our @nejm publication of a novel, ground-breaking REUP (Rapid recovery with Extended Ultraoxygenated preservation) technique for DCD donor heart procurement co-authored by our @VUMChealth#HeartTransplant team. nejm.org/doi/full/10.10…
