What do you want to do?
It is all about choices.

Before Tom Brady became the GOAT, he was a college quarterback fighting for a chance to play.

That is what makes this video with mental coach Greg Harden so powerful.

There is so much GOLD in here for athletes, coaches, and leaders.

⸻

“It’s a rare moment when a kid shows up at my office and says I need some support because I want to be the starting quarterback at Michigan.”

Brady wasn’t looking for sympathy.

He was looking for help becoming the player he believed he could become.

There is something powerful about an athlete who is willing to ask for help in pursuit of something bigger.

⸻

“My job was convince him that if he’s doing the absolute best job he can to be the best competitor on that field then he’ll have a shot.”

Control what you can control.

Your preparation.
Your effort.
Your attitude.
Your competitiveness.

You may not control the depth chart.

But you always control the kind of competitor you become.

⸻

“Not starting breaks your heart, but the key is to not take it personal.”

That is hard for any athlete.

When you believe you should be playing and you aren’t, it feels personal.

But disappointment can either become an excuse or fuel.

Great competitors learn how to handle the hurt without letting it change how they work.

⸻

“He has learned to silence the noise in the clutter in order to focus like a laser beam on the task at hand.”

This may be one of the greatest skills any competitor can develop.

FOCUS.

Block out the noise.
Block out the opinions.
Block out what you cannot control.

Then put your energy into the next rep, the next practice, the next opportunity.

⸻

“He was able to wrestle with any demons he might’ve had in pursuit of perfection.”

Greatness does not mean you never struggle.

It means you learn how to compete through the struggle.

Doubt.
Fear.
Frustration.
Failure.

The best learn how to manage those emotions without allowing those emotions to manage them.

⸻

“My job was to convince him with her without football, he was going to be great.”

This might be the most important lesson of all.

Your performance is something you DO.

It is not who you ARE.

When athletes understand that their value is not tied completely to playing time, statistics, or winning, they are often freed up to compete at a higher level.

That is transformational coaching.

Greg Harden was not just helping Tom Brady become a better quarterback.

He was helping him become a better competitor.

A better thinker.

A better person.

And long before Brady became Brady, those lessons were already laying the foundation. 🏆

Tom Brady says his career turned around when a sports psychologist told him to stop complaining about what he wasn’t getting and start stewarding what he had the right way

“Greg said to me, ‘Why don’t you quit bitching about all the things you’re not getting, and how about you do the best with whatever opportunities you get?’, ‘Stop worrying about what the other quarterback’s getting. Stop worrying about what the coach is saying to you.’”

“‘Every time you get in there, you bring the juice. You bring the energy. You bring the enthusiasm. You treat practice like a game.’ Because if you just decide to go out there and you’re blaming everybody else, where does that get you? So I started to change my attitude.”

“I didn’t have a lot of confidence in myself. And when you don’t have a lot of confidence in yourself, you blame other people. When you gain confidence in yourself, you start pointing the finger at yourself.”

“I would encourage every athlete to look in the mirror after every day of practice or a game and say, ‘What can I do better to help the team? What can I do better?’”

“Not, ‘What does the coach need to do better?’ Not, ‘What do my teammates need to do better?’, ‘What do I need to do better?’ If every player does that, you’re going to have an incredible team.”

“You can’t have a false confidence. You don’t only gain your confidence because of your physical ability. You gain your confidence because you’re prepared, because you’re competitive. I couldn’t just show up and be better than everybody.”

“I had to show up prepared. I had to show up with energy. I had to show up with my body feeling right. I had to show up like I was on a mission.”
