Americans expect to spend an average of $1,011 on Christmas or other holiday gifts in 2026, according to Gallup’s initial measure of their holiday shopping plans.

For the first time in two decades, less than half of French adults say they have confidence in the honesty of their country’s elections.

Even smaller percentages are confident in the judicial system and the national government.

Only 40% of Americans say their town or city is prepared to handle future challenges.

Younger adults are less confident than older adults, with 38% of those aged 18 to 34 agreeing, compared with 45% of adults 55 or older.

Economic pessimism in France is among the highest levels recorded in the past two decades.

Just 14% of French adults say their local economy is getting better, while 73% say it is getting worse — only the second time in two decades that the latter figure has exceeded 70%.

When asked to select the three values the U.S. needs most today from a list of 12, Americans most often choose honesty (34%), responsibility (32%) and integrity (31%), followed by equality (29%) and fairness (26%).
