At one point there were over 4,000 drive-in theaters in the United States like this one in Hobbs, New Mexico. Today, fewer than 300 are still standing.

Same cars. Same snack bar popcorn. Same excuse to stay out past dark. The ones that survived are worth the detour.

60 years on the road together. Our sticker evolved. You stayed.

The routes may change, the rigs may change, but we're still here.

1903. There were only 150 miles of paved road in the entire country, and most people had never seen a car.

Dr. Horatio Nelson Jackson bet $50 he could drive one from San Francisco to New York City. He didn't own a car, had almost no driving experience, and didn't have a single map.

He bought a used Winton touring car, hired a mechanic named Sewall Crocker, and headed east. Somewhere in Idaho, they picked up a bulldog named Bud for $15 and put goggles on him to keep the dust out of his eyes.

63 days, 4,200 miles, and 800 gallons of gas later, they rolled into New York City. The car broke down 15 miles from home on the last stretch to Vermont.

Bud's goggles are still at the Smithsonian.
