Anti-Muslim bigotry is common on Twitter. It is very dumb.
This video is making the rounds, recirculated by lots of accounts (including some that follow me). It shows two cops (presumed to be Muslim) stopping a woman with a dog. The tweet’s claim is that when “you give these people power” [Muslims] they will threaten people for religious reasons.
This is moronic.
Muslim cops are not going around threatening New Yorkers with dogs!
My friends have dogs. I often walk my gf’s dog. No Muslims or cops have ever given me a hard time. Yesterday, I walked the dog into a Yemeni-owned bodega, and the clerk smiled and made “coochy-coo” noises at the dog (she’s very cute).
Part of this Twitter paranoia is the fact that in the Muslim world, some traditions believe dogs are unclean. Not all agree. For example, some religious leaders in Egypt have said dogs are fine and dog ownership for pets has become more common. But none of that concerns NYC where dogs are everywhere.
In other words, it’s all nonsense.
But hatred of Muslims is sadly common. A Pew survey said that the only person people would be less likely to vote for for president than a Muslim is an atheist. Paranoia about Sharia law in the United States (!!) has been around for decades. (My ex father-in-law—a decent dude—used to send me worried emails about his Sharia concerns.)
Being afraid of US Muslims when they only make up 1.5% percent of the US population is bizarre. “What about when they’re 15%?? 40%???” ask the lunatics. Oy. That’s not happening. The top immigrant groups to the US are Mexicans, Indians, and Chinese, in that order (although in total, Asian immigrants are vastly outnumbered by Latin American immigrants). Muslims will remain a tiny minority.
And, like most immigrants, they are mostly good citizens.
What were those two cops doing? I have no idea. We only saw the end of the encounter. They claim she had been in the street. She said not. Maybe they were being jerky cops—it happens—maybe she had been blocking traffic. I don’t know, and neither does anyone spreading the video.
But fearing Muslim cops in NYC? Ludicrous.

Shapiro has had a deep emotional connection to Israel since he was a kid and I don’t think he’s gone through the same evolution as many other American Jews. He still feels protective of it which is why we get evasive answers like this. He’s not it.View quoted post on X
