Healthy ageing begins where we live. The design of our cities and communities profoundly shapes our ability to remain healthy, independent, connected, and engaged throughout life. Yet cities worldwide are navigating unprecedented change. Demographic shifts, climate pressures, evolving patterns of urbanization, and changing social and economic realities are reshaping how communities are planned, designed, and governed. As populations age, the question is no longer whether cities must adapt, but how they can do so strategically, collaboratively, and at scale.

In celebration of World Cities Day, the IFA convened global leaders, practitioners, and experts for Cities Designed for Longer Lives: A Global Leadership Dialogue, held on 29 October. The dialogue explored how city networks, movements, and sectors can break down silos, learn from one another, and work collectively to build communities that are inclusive, healthy, resilient, and sustainable across the life course, while responding to the opportunities and challenges of longer lives.

A clear message emerged: creating longevity-ready cities requires moving beyond isolated initiatives toward coordinated, cross-sector action.

Panellists and participants identified several priorities for action:

- Connecting city movements and aligning efforts around shared priorities, measurable outcomes, and collective impact.

- Embedding longevity and healthy ageing into housing, transportation, infrastructure, climate resilience, and community development strategies.

- Elevating the voices of older persons in decision-making and creating meaningful opportunities to strengthen social connection and participation.

- Moving from dialogue to implementation through cross-network partnerships, shared evidence, and integrated approaches in cities where initiatives already intersect.

The dialogue marks an important milestone in the development of the IFA's Longevity-Ready Cities and Communities Accelerator, a global initiative designed to connect existing movements, strengthen local capacity, and embed longevity considerations into the systems, policies, and environments that shape our communities.

The IFA extends its sincere thanks to all speakers and participants for their leadership, expertise, and commitment. We look forward to building on this momentum and translating shared ambition into tangible action and measurable outcomes.
