Medical student Mikayla Gibson recently visited Johnston High School in Johnston, Iowa, to share her journey to medical school. The visit, part of the Hawkeye Hometown program, introduces students to health science careers and explores STEM. By connecting with students in their own communities, Hawkeye med students are helping inspire the next generation of health care professionals! 🩺💛

“That’s what my career was all about — helping people,” says Roxie Albrecht (84MD), recipient of the 2026 Distinguished Alumni Award for Achievement. A leader in trauma surgery, she helped establish Oklahoma’s first Level I trauma center and statewide trauma care system.

No medical students were forced to become ophthalmologists during this Q&A. 👀 Will Flanary, MD (@DGlaucomflecken), returned to campus as a 2026 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient to share his experiences and advice with our medical students.

Our Distinguished Alumni Award recipients returned to campus last week to connect with fellow Hawkeyes and celebrate their impact in patient care, research, education, and service. 🙌 As the highest honor the college bestows, this award recognizes graduates who are changing medicine and changing lives.
