NEW: ICE to release Wisconsin State Trooper Carel Aaron Van Der Merwe, attorney Marc Christopher says.

Pending removal proceedings, the trooper will be required to check in with ICE regularly and be monitored by an electronic device.

Trooper Carel Aaron Van Der Merwe is being held at the ICE detention facility in Dodge County, Wisconsin.

His attorney, Marc Christopher, says the trooper holds a valid work authorization.

Can we agree after this campaign that doing doors in statewide and even local politics is hugely overrated theater? It’s 2026 and not 1975. Most people don’t answer and are cranky and bothered if they do. Almost none of the 2,000 people who opened wanted to talk about “issues.”
