Protecting the ozone layer remains essential to safeguarding the environment and human well-being, while supporting the transition towards more sustainable and energy-efficient cooling solutions.

As Namibia continues to strengthen its efforts in protecting the ozone layer, the Ministry in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), celebrated the World Ozone Day 2026 today under the theme “Global Action for a Cooler Planet” at the UN Plaza in Katutura.

Various speakers highlighted the importance of promoting environmentally responsible practices within the refrigeration and air-conditioning (RAC) sector, particularly through skills development, the safe handling, proper recovery of refrigerants, and improved access to appropriate recovery equipment for technicians and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

The transition to environmentally friendly refrigerants and sustainable cooling technologies, as well as safe disposal of RACs presents opportunities for technological advancement growth of a more resilient cooling sector in Namibia.

The event concluded with an exhibition showcasing sustainable cooling technologies and solutions for the public to gain practical knowledge on approaches that can contribute to a cooler and more sustainable planet.

For the Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy, electrification is not only about connecting communities to power, it is about unlocking economic opportunities, supporting productive use of energy, enabling entrepreneurship and contributing to Namibia’s industrialisation and development agenda.

As part of the Ministry’s mandate to promote sustainable energy development and expand access to reliable energy as a catalyst for socio-economic development, Honourable Modestus, today officially commissioned the electrification infrastructure at Haimbodi Hamukoto Growth Centre in Epanya Village, Okatana Constituency, Oshana Region.

Delivering the keynote address, the Minister called on the community to protect the infrastructure, report cable theft and vandalism, use electricity safely and pay for the electricity they consume. He emphasised that the investment made in the infrastructure belongs to the people, and protecting it is ultimately protecting their own development.
