Today, From Gujarat to India: Water Lessons for the World was launched at IIM Bangalore (@iimb_official), and we are glad to have supported it. The report underscores how safe sanitation and effective water management are fundamental to better health, stronger livelihoods, and economic progress.

India’s journey offers important lessons, and this timely case study by Parameswaran Iyer (@paramiyer_), former Secretary, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Dr Daniel W. Smith of George Mason University, and Dr Nitin Bassi (@NitinBassiN, @CEEWIndia) reflects on 25 years of sustained progress in water governance under PM Narendra Modi’s, tracing the journey from Gujarat’s response to drought in 2001 to national programmes since 2014 that have expanded access to water and sanitation and improved quality of life for millions.

Under the Jal Jeevan Mission alone, rural household tap coverage has risen significantly from 17 per cent in 2019 to over 80 per cent today. The case study draws lessons that countries across the Global South can adapt – lead with governance, manage the water resource and service together, and root initiatives in community ownership.

It was a pleasure meeting @DrJitendraSingh and discussing how governments can strengthen their ability to deliver results at scale, even as they face fast-moving shocks and rising expectations.

India offers some of the strongest answers to this question, reflecting years of institutional learning that can offer lessons well beyond its borders.

That's why the Kautilya Global Centre for State Capacity, in partnership with Nalanda University, can serve as an important platform for India to share this experience with countries across the Global South, while continuing to learn from their journeys too. This will build space for a robust South-South learning and exchange.

It was inspiring to see the scale of platforms like Bharat Vistaar and AI-enabled advisory services, which are reaching over 50 million farmers across India, and livelihood missions such as the DAY-NRLM, which is one of the world’s largest women-led platforms, reaching over 100 million women from rural households.

Together, these platforms are enabling small-scale producers improve productivity, strengthen resilience and increase incomes. India’s approach to combining science, technology and public systems in agriculture could offer useful lessons across the Global South as part of India’s broader leadership.
