NASA Webb Telescope @NASAWebb Jul 31

This July was our 4th science anniversary, and the results have been fascinating! Bringing us previously unseen details from all throughout the universe to right here in our own solar system, Webb has given scientists, and the world, a powerful new set of tools.

Happy Halloween! 👻

Like a spectral form rising out of a cold mist, @NASAHubble and Webb have captured a hauntingly dynamic star-forming scene, which lies within the vast Carina Nebula, a diffuse star-forming region located about 7,500 light-years away from Earth.

Mid-infrared image of the Cat’s Head Nebula by Webb. A bluish-gray filament of dust is in the center, stretching from the bottom to almost the very top. It has a narrow, irregular shape that resembles a cat sitting with its back toward the viewer and a tail extending downward. The cat’s head is turned toward the right, revealing a white glowing eye.

(middle) Near-infrared also by Webb. An orange-brown filament of dust is in the center, stretching from the bottom to almost the very top. On the cat’s left are ghostly filaments of dust.

(center) Visible-light image by Hubble. A dark brown, opaque filament of dust is in the center, stretching from the bottom to almost the very top. Approximately halfway down, cutting diagonally across the frame, the background color changes from blue to yellow, orange, and finally red near the bottom.

Pspspsp! Just in time for Halloween, NASA’s Hubble and James Webb Space Telescopes recently stared at an eerie star-forming scene within the Carina Nebula, a massive gas and dust cloud located approximately 7,500 light-years away from Earth.

Rest easy, Captain. We have the helm. ✨

This is Webb’s look at Westerlund 1, a super star cluster. Because our galaxy is past its peak of star formation, and because stars live relatively short lives, only a few of these clusters exist to give us clues to that past era.

$Image description: A quote by Captain Jean-Luc Picard, played by Patrick Stewart. "I've come to believe that the stars have always been in my favor." - Jean-Luc Picard. The image shows a dense cluster of bright stars, each with six large and two small diffraction spikes, due to the telescope’s optics. They have a variety of sizes depending on their brightness and distance from us in the cluster, and different colors reflecting different types of star. Patches of billowing red gas can be seen in and around the cluster, lit up by the stars. Small stars in the cluster blend into a background of distant stars and galaxies on black.$

@NASAHubble and @NASAWebb captured a purr-fect view of the Cat’s Head Nebula.

This long thin structure, made of dark, dense dust, looks like the head of a cat, its eye a newborn star still shrouded by the dust and gas from which it formed.
