From childhood visits to Lake Mead to research that could help protect it. 💧🔬

Meet Piper Irvin, a first-generation @unlv college student pursuing her master's degree in geoscience at @UNLV_CoS. She's studying how sediments from the Las Vegas Wash could affect Lake Mead's water quality, putting her passion for science to work on an issue close to home.

Ahead of First-Generation College Celebration Day on Sunday, Nov. 8, we're celebrating first-gen students across Nevada's public colleges and universities and the incredible things they're accomplishing.

“Language and culture are a huge part of who we are. When those are strong, our communities are stronger too.” ❤️

For Misty Youngbear, that belief is central to her work as a nurse serving the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe.

Misty, who is Meskwaki, earned her master's degree in public health from @unevadareno while continuing to care for patients. She's combining her clinical experience with a focus on prevention, education and culturally informed care to support the health of the community she serves.

This Native American Heritage Month, we're celebrating Native American students, graduates and professionals like Misty who are making a difference in communities across Nevada.

From pitching an invention to explaining a public health issue, knowing your subject is only part of the job. You also have to communicate it! 💬

For National Career Development Month, we're spotlighting how the University of Nevada, Las Vegas is helping students across majors build those skills.

Through its COM Lab, students can practice public speaking, get feedback from peer coaches and even rehearse on camera in a new recording studio.

See how @unlv is helping students strengthen skills they'll use throughout their careers. 👇
