Republican’t | Rate Expectations | Rules Britannia

Donald Trump and JD Vance received their midterm report this week, and it’s fair to say neither will be sticking it on the fridge. The Republicans’ defeat has left both men explaining what went wrong, with rather bigger questions about what comes next for the party, the presidency and everyone else. With the global economy hanging on what Trump does next, Andy Burnham returned from the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting to tackle the big issues back home: e-bike rules and job ad salaries. Global uncertainty, meet the small print…

And in our Bonfire Night week special - as Parliament considers the restoration and renewal of the parliamentary estate, @electionmapsuk looks at the number of times in recent years the threat of fire has reared its ugly head again...

From North Sea drilling to the quiet carriage, no brief is apparently too big or too small. But with the Budget coming next week, all eyes now turn to the Chancellor – whose announcements may prove rather harder to greet with a polite request to turn it down.

And do Budget's impact the polls? Head over to our website the find out what @electionmapsuk found looking at what the last six Chancellors' Budgets did to their Government's standings amongst the public. Spoiler alert: it's much easier to do wrong than right...

MPs returned from conference recess this week, and @andyburnham wasted little time taking everyone back to 2016, reopening the Brexit argument with a podcast answer on Russian interference – just as preparations for November’s UK-EU summit get under way. The PM also welcomed Ukrainian President Zelenskyy to Downing Street, as Donald Trump appeared to lose interest in welcoming Ukraine anywhere. And for anyone who thought Parliament’s return meant the conference circuit was finally over, spare a thought for those colleagues still going at @theSNP in Aberdeen…

Brum and Done.

A really interesting couple of days at @Conservatives Party Conference earlier this week and well done to the Navigate Politics team for another packed week of conference coverage. It almost feels like we're willing Parliament to return for a break...
