“These Sunsets Are To Die For” depicts a beautiful but ominous sunset, disturbingly amplified by pollution. The image is inspired by the dramatic pollution-fueled sunsets I witnessed in Providence, Rhode Island. The scene in the original painting the print is based on is from a photo I took in Brooklyn looking across the river to Manhattan where the factory smoke merged with the clouds at sundown. The image is also a part of my highway mural in Munich, Germany facilitated by ‌Positive-Propaganda. This print, like all that use French Cream Speckle Tone, is on 80% recycled paper.

I recently took the stage with fellow artist and activist Hank Willis Thomas at @Summit #Detroit to discuss our shared sensibilities and creative approaches to provocative public works that disrupt and challenge conventional thinking. From the earliest days of my Obey art project, the idea has been to prompt viewers to observe their environment and question their surroundings, encouraging them to see beyond the surface.

Thank you, Hank, for your wisdom and inspiration. Thank you, Summit, for having me! - Shepard
