Subsea cables get cut. Gateways get targeted. If your data depends on ground infrastructure you don’t control, that’s an operational risk.

At Defence in Space 2026, our CTO and co-founder Jordi Barrera Ars took the stage to present “Satellites for a Contested World,” and the full keynote is now online.

He breaks down how ConnectedCosmos tackles this with a sovereign, gatewayless backbone, linking satellites via optical mesh and merging live Earth observation, broadband, and IoT so actionable intelligence moves terminal-to-terminal in real time without ever touching the ground.

It was a pleasure to welcome Paloma McGuiness, CEO of the National Security Strategic Investment Fund, Hannah Lim, DG Technology GCHQ and Simon Fabri, CEO of HMGCC to Open Cosmos.

The visit provided an opportunity to meet more of our team, see our facilities and satellite manufacturing capabilities first-hand, and discuss the importance of collaboration between government and industry.

On our production line, they saw ConnectedCosmos satellites being built: the foundation for our sovereign connectivity constellation, designed to give governments and businesses secure communications they control. It’s a clear example of dual-use technology in practice, built here in the UK.

As an investor in Open Cosmos, NSSIF plays an important role in supporting our growth and our ambition to deliver secure, resilient and sovereign space capabilities.

Thank you to Paloma, Hannah and Simon for taking the time to visit and engage with our team.

Thursday evening, our CEO Rafel Jordà Siquier joined Chancellor @JohnHealey_MP at 11 Downing Street to discuss how the UK’s Autumn Budget can help British companies scale globally.

With an additional £5 billion for the British Business Bank, £700 million for AI, expanded employee share schemes, and new procurement measures supporting British suppliers, the Budget signals a commitment to backing UK innovation, particularly across defence and advanced technologies.

Rafel shared the Open Cosmos growth story: from a handful of employees to hundreds, from taking years to produce a single satellite to having the capacity to manufacture one a day, and from the UK to the world.

But scaling requires more than ambition. Access to capital, attracting world-class talent, and the government acting as an anchor customer for sovereign capabilities are essential.

If delivered effectively, these initiatives could remove many of the bottlenecks UK scaleups have faced and unlock the next wave of British industrial growth.

That’s a wrap on Defence in Space 2026!

It’s been a fantastic few days for Open Cosmos, marked by four separate stage appearances across the programme covering everything from contested constellations and direct-to-device connectivity to policy, and the future space workforce.

Events like this underscore just how vital resilient space infrastructure and actionable data are becoming. Thank you to everyone who stopped by the stand, joined the sessions, and shared their perspectives throughout the event.

Hyperion GR-1 has delivered its first images, marking a major milestone for Greece’s Earth Observation capabilities.

Now in its final commissioning stages, the satellite has captured high-resolution views over Athens and Attica. Hyperion GR-1 is designed with onboard AI and Inter-satellite Links, to deliver critical data in as little as 30 minutes for agriculture, border, and maritime surveillance.

The mission is the first of seven satellites being delivered by Open Cosmos Aegean, for the Ministry of Digital Governance @MinDigitalGr, funded through the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility and implemented with the European Space Agency @esa and the Hellenic Space Center.

It also marks one of two satellites that kicked off OpenConstellation 1.0. The remaining six satellites are either awaiting launch or are in final stages of end-to-end integration and testing in Greece.

“We welcome the first image from the Hyperion GR-1 satellite, which shows a location symbolic for both Greece and Europe, celebrating the successful collaboration between the Greek government, Open Cosmos and the European Space Agency. The image offers an early glimpse of the fully deployed constellation’s potential; we look forward to the next steps in strengthening Greece’s capacity for disaster management, environmental monitoring and national security.” - SimonettaCheli @SimonettaCheli, Director of Earth Observation Programmes at ESA
