A PCORI-funded RCT compared 2 community-based cavity treatment programs:
1️⃣ Standard treatment consisting of treatment with hand instruments followed by application of a topical fluoride varnish
2️⃣ New community-based program using topical silver diamine fluoride (SDF) applied by dental hygienists, which does not require hand instruments or drilling but can permanently darken areas of tooth decay

After one year, participants in both programs had similar outcomes in controlling tooth decay, reducing tooth pain, preventing new cavities and improving quality of life related to oral health. Treatment with SDF twice yearly was found to be more effective than treatment once yearly. pcori.me/4eba1Xd
