The story of the year in 2021 was this one written on Foreign Substance use in Baseball. It started a media storm & changed the game

But did you know the story was written here in Pittsburgh at PVS?

A brief history of PVS is woven into the piece as well

We love it when this
Baller comes to town!!!!!

@BevBandits2029 Super Utility @AnnabelMikesell was back in Pittsburgh

Annabel gets to Pittsburgh quite regularly so we’re always trying to challenge her with new concepts.

We played around with front leg behavior to take away some deceleration issues she was having. It worked quite well so we moved on to a newer concept of creating momentum with piston like movement of the legs. Quickly get your feet u beneath you to generate momentum in an effort to get rid of the ball quickly & to to the target. We did this with both outfield throws as well as Middle infield challenges.

Can you help my __year old throw faster?

How We answer this question @ PVS

Most people have figured out that pitching velocity is a gateway to more opportunity. What hasn’t kept up with that realization - is the nuance behind answering the question.

It is a case by case study or practice too many parents don’t have the patience to accept. How we answer that question is drastically different depending on age, physical maturation and a host of other variables. With younger athletes, Puberty and natural growth drive large velocity gains. Any Training should support that, not rush it!

In this video is 6th grader Aaron Colf from Greentree & 2031 Aiden Astorino from South Fayette.

“Astro” has been slowly rewriting our record books set by Graham Keen (Vanderbilt) and Drew Lafferty (Kentucky/ Pitt) before him. Young Aaron
is primed to rewrite it again.

So when he came to us and asked about working on that, we gave him an answer he wasn’t exactly looking for. You see every young person sees Social media / what the older guys are doing & thinks they’re just a couple thousand plyo throws away from throwing 90. That’s not the way it works.

So we told him we would write him a program unique to what he needs now…. And we will share it here on Social media next week to illustrate how involved this processes is/ how thought out it is / and how we have to constantly retest to make sure things are going where we want them to go. We will, of course qualify what we post with the fact that this is for Aaron and not for someone else who hasn’t gone through what Erin has nor has aaron’s gifts and limitations and a host of factor such as mobility, strength and consistency.

In the mean time: Here are a few things (among many) to consider when your son asks you “what can I do to throw faster?”

1/ Overuse is a bigger risk than insufficient training. Follow pitch-count and rest guidelines available (Pitch Smart)

2/ Individual assessment. Tight hips, weak glutes, or sequencing issues vary. A knowledgeable coach, strength coach, or physical therapist experienced with baseball athletes is ideal for screening and progression

3/ Long-term development beats short-term spikes.

4/ Use the young athletes desire for velocity as an opportunity to teach good habits that will not only help him throw faster, but make him a more well-adjusted adult one day. Pair the work with overall athleticism, sleep, nutrition, and recovery concepts the kid can follow and understand. This could be building systems for a life of health and fitness!

5/ Consistent, supervised practice produces better results and lower injury risk than isolated arm work. If the athlete has pain or prior issues, get a professional evaluation first. Pain is a red flag. Treat it as such. Before anybody can push for increased performance - they must first address taking pain away.

Resources for Mom & Dad:
@MozingoBaseball - has spent countless hours and written several e-books on this topic

@NunzioSignore - 1 of the very best in the business at taking a total body approach to increasing athletic performance

@DrivelineYouth / @devenmorgan -
Has done a lot of the tedious, but important work of testing young athletes, warehousing the data….retesting and interpreting …..to produce valuable insight into what works best for developing young baseball players over years not weeks.

@billmills - innovative performance coach with several published works

@CoachBeede - a central hub of sorts… for information covering a wide range of important topics for young players as they age up.
