Dolores Huerta was one of my heroes, and I am heartbroken that she has passed. But more than grief, I feel gratitude. She walked this earth for 96 years and she spent nearly every one of them in service to people the powerful had decided were invisible.

She gave the world three words: Sí, se puede. Yes, we can. But she did more than coin a phrase. She lived it. Through her decades of labor leadership, she gave a voice to farmworkers who had no union, no contracts, no protection, and no one in power who believed they could win. She organized the grape boycott. She negotiated agreements no one thought possible. She was arrested more than twenty times for peaceful protest and once beaten so badly by police that it took her months to recover. She got up every time. She never stopped.

Dolores understood something I hold at the center of my faith: that we are all bound together, and none of us are free until all of us are free. She fought for farmworkers, for women, for immigrants, for children. And she did it into her nineties, still organizing, still registering voters, still insisting that ordinary people have extraordinary power when they act together.

Dolores, thank you. You taught us that love is not a feeling but a labor. We will honor you the only way that would matter to you: by continuing to organize, to stand up, to vote, and to fight for the dignity of every person.

Sí, se puede. Always.

Eight years ago, 11 lives were tragically cut short in the antisemitic attack at the Tree of Life synagogue. As we honor their memories, we must reaffirm our collective commitment to protecting houses of worship and ending gun violence.
