A star lot in our #SothebysGeneva Royal & Noble live sale, this jewel has passed through the private collections of two celebrated tastemakers of their eras: Helena Rubinstein (1872–1965) and Jayne Wrightsman (1919–2019).

Though their lives and collecting journeys were very different, both women assembled art collections of the highest distinction, and this jewel is a testament to their discerning eyes.

Its boldness, monumental scale and striking visual presence speak to the aesthetic favoured by Rubinstein, while its impeccable classicism, romantic sensibility and grandeur reflect the refined taste that characterised much of Wrightsman's collecting.

At the heart of the 166th Hospices de Beaune Wine Auction is the Hôtel-Dieu de Beaune. Founded in 1443 under the patronage of Guigone de Salins and Nicolas Rolin, the hospital has provided care and shelter to the most vulnerable members of the local community.

This year's annual Hospices de Beaune auction continues this legacy, with all proceeds dedicated to funding medical care and maintaining the organisation's hospitals.

In 2024, construction began on a new 15,000-square-metre building on the Beaune site. With an estimated cost of €86 million, the project will be partly funded through the generosity of buyers at this year's auction, helping secure the future of healthcare for the local community.
