In Building the Marketplace Loop, Marshall Smith, CEO of Starlab Space, looks at the role commercial stations can play in creating that connection between Earth and orbit.

“Everything starts on the surface, and it ends on the surface.”

Research travels to orbit. Experiments become discoveries. Discoveries can become products and services. Materials, data, and manufactured goods return to customers on Earth. Each successful cycle creates the opportunity for another.

The station becomes the place where those activities meet.

As Smith puts it, “Our purpose is to build a commercial economy. The space station is just the location where the factory is, if you will.”

In Extend. Clear. Repeat., Michael Madrid, Chief Growth Officer at Starfish Space, explores the two sides of an emerging satellite servicing infrastructure: extending the lives of valuable spacecraft and helping remove failed assets when their useful lives end.

Starfish’s Otter is being developed to service satellites that were never designed with standardized docking interfaces. In GEO, that can mean providing life extension to a functioning satellite. In LEO, it can mean moving a failed spacecraft toward atmospheric reentry. As orbital traffic grows, those capabilities can help preserve valuable orbital regions for continued use.

Troy Morris, Co-Founder and CEO of KMI Space, has a wonderfully simple way to describe what his company is building: tow trucks for space.

In The Tow Trucks of Orbit, we explore how KMI is developing technology to approach, capture, and move objects already in orbit. That could mean relocating a valuable satellite, moving an asset out of harm’s way, or removing an object before it becomes a hazard.

But the tow truck itself is only part of the story.

Morris sees mobility becoming infrastructure, creating a network where spacecraft can be repositioned, rescued, serviced, reused, and eventually incorporated into a much larger orbital economy.

His goal? “Make space wonderfully mundane so we can build big things.”

In Maneuver Without Regret, Kara Grubis, Vice President of Strategic Defense Products at Agile Space Industries, explores propulsion architectures designed to give spacecraft greater flexibility after launch.
