Stanford Engineering

Congratulations to Stanford Bioengineering Professor @KarlDeisseroth for winning the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine. His pioneering advancements in optogenetics and neuroscience have transformed the study of brain function and behavior. @StanfordMed @bioe_stanford

“We don’t say, how can we use an existing tool well? We look at the problem and say, how can we make a new tool that will allow us to answer questions much, much more effectively?” It’s how @KarlDeisseroth and his colleagues developed optogenetics.

Stanford’s @KarlDeisseroth knew that understanding the brain would take more than understanding its chemistry. He joined @bioe_stanford to work with people who could build tools to advance brain science. “I don't think I could have done what we did anywhere else, really.”

Nobel laureate @KarlDeisseroth came to neuroscience through words. His love of literature and writing drew him toward the human brain, and a required psychiatry rotation in medical school set him on the path to developing optogenetics. Here, he traces that journey.

Linguist and computer scientist, Dan Jurafsky, explores overly affirming AI along with PhD student, Myra Cheng.
