Li Bin Warns: 20% Increase in Vehicle Weight Doubles Road Damage

At the Auto Night Talk forum during the 2026 World Internet Conference (Wuzhen Caffee) on November 5, William Li, founder, chairman, and CEO of NIO, engaged in a joint dialogue with Li Shufu, chairman of Geely Holding Group. This marked their first public dialogue together since reaching a comprehensive strategic cooperation on charging and battery swapping on September 28.
During the forum, Li revisited the issue of vehicle kerb weight. "Some vehicles are equipped with 120 kWh battery packs weighing 700 to 800 kilograms. While weight isn't much of an issue for the vehicle itself, has anyone calculated its impact on the roads?" Li noted. "At 1.2 times the vehicle weight, the damage to roads increases to 2.07 times."
Previously, during a livestream on July 6, 2025, Li pointed out that while blindly expanding battery capacity yields range gains, "heavier vehicles cause greater damage to roads—which is why many countries base their vehicle taxes on weight." The topic quickly trended on social media platforms.
