Nigeria is reviewing its cybersecurity laws to counter mounting threats as artificial intelligence (AI) makes fraud, digital deception, and attacks on critical infrastructure harder to detect.

AI was linked to 55% of cybercrime incidents recorded across Africa last year, while deepfake cases increased sevenfold between the second and fourth quarters of 2024. Cybercriminals are using AI to automate scams, create convincing fake identities, and more quickly identify weaknesses in critical systems. This means attackers are adopting the technology faster than institutions can strengthen their defences, leaving existing security systems and laws struggling to keep up.

This growing technology gap is the primary driver behind the current legislative review, as the Nigerian government acknowledges that existing frameworks fail to provide adequate guardrails or align with international best practices.

Qatar is offering foreign tech founders up to $5.5 million in funding to back growth-stage startups that want to operate in the gas-rich Gulf country, alongside visas, subsidised housing, and business support. Behind the incentives is a broader ambition to make Qatar a destination for global entrepreneurs.

For a tech founder considering where to build their next company, Qatar is making an unusual offer: move your business to the Gulf state, and receive up to $5.5 million in investment funding, help securing residency, subsidised office space, and housing support.

The offer, open to founders globally, including those from Africa, comes through the Startup Qatar Investment Programme, an initiative run by the government-owned Qatar Development Bank (QDB) to attract foreign entrepreneurs looking to establish or expand their businesses in the country.

Being listed on Google does not guarantee a business will appear prominently when potential customers search for its services. Google says local search results are mainly based on three factors: relevance, distance, and prominence.

Relevance measures how closely a business profile matches a search; distance considers how far the business is from the person searching. Prominence reflects how well-known it is online, including through customer reviews and links from other websites.

Olaiya says businesses can improve their visibility by ensuring their Google Business Profiles accurately describe their services, keeping their business information consistent across online platforms, and encouraging customers to leave reviews.
