DeMeco Ryans mentioned this week that with Mike McDaniel taking over as Chargers OC, the Texans have to study what he's done in the past.

The last time DeMeco faced McDaniel was Week 15 of 2024, when the Texans held his Dolphins offense to just 12 points and intercepted Tua Tagovailoa 3 times.

Obviously different teams and personnel, but I think there's a lot to take away from that game.

DeMeco did a great job disguising coverages, rotating safeties post-snap and confusing Tua. One of my favorite examples was Calen Bullock rotating down from a two-high shell into a robber look on a cover 2 invert, putting himself in position to make plays on the ball.

Fast forward to Sunday, and I think a similar approach could be effective against Justin Herbert.

As I've highlighted in my Herbert interception breakdown, many of his mistakes this season haven't necessarily been the result of pressure. They've come from questionable decisions and processing issues in a new offense that appears to ask him to work through more pure progressions rather than read the defense.

Rather than relying solely on pressure, I'd love to see DeMeco muddy the picture with disguised coverages, late rotations and different post-snap looks, and cover 2 invert could be a great way to do that.

It worked twice vs Tua in 2024 and DeMeco ran it twice vs Trevor Lawrence, whom I think does plenty of pure progression passing in that system himself. One play it wasn't a factor, but late in the game it should've yeilded a Bullock interception.

C.J. Stroud and OC Nick Caley on finding ways to get Nico Collins more involved in the Texans offense:

Stroud: “Nico is the guy. He’s the number one. He’s who everybody game plans for. So we got to find ways to get more creative.”

Stroud pointed to the tough coverages Nico has faced, particularly against the Giants, but believes they’re better prepared to get him involved moving forward.

Caley: “The goal is always to make him a focal point of our offense.”

Caley specifically mentioned moving Collins around, using him differently positionally and schematically, and acknowledged: “I can do a better job of that.”

.@Tankdell4 on his return to football says that he tried to come back in training camp but knew he had to “shut it down” and needed more time to “be who I needed to be.”

He said he started to feel a turn in mid September.
