The Employment Rights Act 2025 has come into force, strengthening protections against sexual harassment at work. But medical students training in the same clinical settings and facing the same risks must not be forgotten. They deserve the same protection and care.

Trusted health journalism is an essential public service.

We’re urging the BBC to reconsider reported cuts affecting its health team. Their specialist reporting is vital to scrutinising health services, exposing failures and challenging misinformation.

Dear Mr Brittin, I am writing to you as Chair of the British Medical Association to raise our serious concern about reported cuts that will negatively affect the BBC’s health coverage, including the
removal of the dedicated health editor position. I urge you to reconsider this decision and ask that the BBC protects the specialist reporting undertaken by its health journalists. Health journalism is core to the BBC’s mission, values and public purpose. The ability to
explain complex health issues, investigate failures in care and hold powerful and complex NHS institutions to account is crucial. The BMA is itself subject to that same scrutiny and we welcome robust and independent journalism. At a time of sustained pressure on health services, and when misleading health claims can spread rapidly, the need for authoritative and independent scrutiny is clear.
