In 2014, I bid $632 for Bitcoin when the market price was $618.

I bought around 30,000 BTC at the US Marshals auction.

The possibility of a different financial system drew me in. If Bitcoin transformed the world economy, the difference between $618 and $632 would barely matter.

There were about 10,000 new venture funds started between 2019 and 2022.

They have not done well.

That money went deep and wide. Little seed groups everywhere.

What happened? Markets shifted. Returns compressed. Competition exploded.

Most of those funds won't raise a second fund.

That's the reality of venture: It looks easier than it is.

From the outside, it's "just invest in startups." From the inside, it's judgment, timing, relationships, and conviction through the J-curve.

The funds that survive will be the ones that differentiate. That built real advantages.

Not the ones that just showed up with capital.

We are thrilled that Draper Associates has been named to @Inc's 2026 Founder-Friendly Investors list, but it belongs to the founders.

Founder-friendly is a funny phrase to me, because the entrepreneurs are the superheroes here, win or lose. They walk into my office with great visions of the future that might seem outlandish or controversial, but years later might just give humans an anthropomorphic leap.

I see myself as someone who can imagine the future inside those visions and give them early support needed to prove it out to the world. Also to help the entrepreneurs stay steady on the tiller as they go through their tumultuous journey.
