As Hillsborough County faces its largest #dengue outbreak on record, USF Health's College of Public Health is bringing research, technology and community engagement together to support local prevention efforts.
Led by Benjamin Jacob, associate professor of biostatistics and data science, faculty and students are using geographic artificial intelligence (Geo-AI), satellite imagery and environmental data to identify potential mosquito breeding hotspots and help guide targeted mosquito control efforts.
The college is also working alongside public health partners on neighborhood outreach, hands-on training and multilingual educational resources to help residents understand how to reduce mosquito breeding and protect themselves from dengue.

Did you know lung recovery after COVID-19 could hold clues to treating other lung diseases? 🫁
This #HealthyLungMonth, we’re highlighting research led by Dr. Herazo-Maya, director of the Ubben Center for Pulmonary Fibrosis Research and an associate professor at the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine.
His team is exploring why lung scarring improves in some patients after severe COVID-19 but progresses in those with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Understanding these differences could help guide future treatments.
