Generating good and useful rubrics is hard. Nice to see work improving the process!

Can today’s LLMs generate rubrics that reliably evaluate tomorrow’s smarter models? Automated rubric generation can save enormous expert effort, but prior work didn’t evaluate responses from LLMs released after the rubric-generator model.

Our new paper investigates how to best scale test-time compute for this, developing a new rubric generation pipeline called Rubricon. Rather than just relying on LLM self-critique, Rubricon grounds rubric-refinement in how candidate rubrics actually score example responses.

Compared to 4 other synthetic rubric generation methods across 5 diverse benchmarks, Rubricon rubrics consistently score model responses more like human experts do [1/n]

StudentBench greatest strength is the large number of real humans who participated as students and tutors.
However, this makes it hard to run the study with new models, so we created a leaderboard of the lesson plans using LLMs as the judges.

We test that the LLM-based judges align with humans, and after confirming this, we use the system to rank lesson plans from recently released models. Kimi K3.1, Astra, and Fable 5.1 take the top spots! 🥉🥈🥇

Today we establish that AI is as good as expert human tutors for immediate GRE learning gains (p=.015, n=2,383 students, study conducted July-Sep 2026).

One hour with an expert GRE tutor: $75.
One equivalent hour with an AI tutor: 7 cents .
918x cheaper, equivalent learning (p=.044, n = 140).

In 5 of 7 academic topics, the top AI tutor beat the expert human tutors on average.

How we measured it: pre-test -> 1 hour with (AI or human or no) tutor -> post-test.
There are no LLM judges. Learning gains are post-pre. Everything is real students.

Why we did this:
> 1 trillion USD is being spent per year on machines making machines better. StudentBench shows us how to shift these resources so machines also make humans better.

Why I did this:
I grew up in rural Kentucky. My dad, grandad, and great grandad were all mailmen. Getting into a good college changed my life. Now we have done a rigorous study to help AI labs evaluate LLMs and help show how bright AI can be for students of all incomes.

I believe in good science that leads to the democratization of opportunity.

Data, code, details: in this thread

If you're wondering what I'm selling, sorry to disappoint: we released all study data for free on Hugging Face, and made studentbench.org free to use. Enjoy.

lots more in the video / thread!!

Tried running it overnight and found (amongst other things) that the modified weights are not unique.
Rikiya Takehi @rikiyatakehi 5d
We asked GPT-6 Astra to edit Qwen3.5-0.8B weights to improve math.
It directly changed only 0.016% of weights, fixing 0.8B's reasoning loops & improving math up to 6x and even instruction following 3x, without gradients or training.

We call this Weight-Space Programming: frontier LLMs can now natively read/write neural network weights! 🧵

So does Carbon landing on the top spot make DeepMind a frontier lab again?? @SemiAnalysis_

“we believe DeepMind is no longer a frontier lab. […] Google will continue meandering on and releasing models, but their odds of reaching SOTA again have dropped to zero.”

Zero? Really? While Gemini 3.5 Pro might not be sota, it seems quite bold to say effectively never

Now that Gemini 4 Argon is out, it will be interesting to see if @SemiAnalysis_ will continue believing GDM is not a frontier lab (guess we will learn once the API access becomes generally available and the vibes come in)
