BREAKING: NASA just announced a new Starship mission for its Moon Base and awarded SpaceX a spot in its $10 billion Moon cargo program.

• Starship will launch communications satellites near the Moon in 2028. The mission will help NASA develop a network linking astronauts and the Moon Base to mission control on Earth.

• Falcon 9 will launch some of NASA’s new Moon Base missions.

• SpaceX was also picked to compete for cargo deliveries to the Moon’s surface under a new 10-year NASA program worth up to $10 billion across all providers.

ELON MUSK: Starship’s full reusability will cut the cost of reaching space by a factor of 100.

“The major breakthrough that SpaceX is hoping to achieve is full reusability. No one has ever achieved full reusability of a rocket, which is very important for the cost of access to space.

We've achieved partial re usability with Falcon 9. We've now landed the boost stage over 500 times, but we have to throw away the upper stage. The upper stage burns up on reentry and the cost of that is equivalent to a small to medium sized jet.

So with Starship, which is a giant rocket, it's the largest flying machine ever made, we should prove full reusability, which will be a profound invention, because the cost of access to space will drop by a factor of 100 when you achieve full reusability. So it makes putting large satellites into space very low, very cheap.”

ELON MUSK: “The fundamental breakthrough that's needed is full and rapid reusability, which we're hoping to achieve with the Starship design by catching the ship, and then reflying the ship either later this year or early next year.

“With our Falcon 9 rocket, we recover the boost stage and the fairing, but not the upper stage. And this is like throwing away a medium-sized jet on every flight.

Full and immediate reusability of rockets, like aircraft, is the fundamental breakthrough that's needed to extend life beyond Earth, to make life multi-planetary, and to create self-growing cities on the Moon and Mars.”
