“They’ve been hitting my credit card since 2023 for a product that doesn’t exist.”
That’s Brian Morrissey (@bmorrissey), founder of the media newsletter and podcast The Rebooting, on the forgotten subscription Meta’s Muse agent found for him. A new consumer AI agent’s most popular use case is canceling forgotten subscriptions, and if your revenue comes from recurring fees, that should get your attention.
Morrissey shared the story with Jeff Sant, COO of Chargebee, at Beelieve ’26 NYC. It shows what happens when the people using a product become an ever-smaller percentage of the people paying for it. Agents like Muse are making that gap visible, which is a strong argument for pricing that tracks real usage. Media has been working through this challenge for years, and software is starting to feel it too.
Sant explained why the pressure is building. For roughly twenty years, SaaS ran on a fixed recurring fee and an 80 to 85 percent gross margin. AI has changed the math, because inference costs grow with usage while a flat access fee stays the same.
Sant invoked telecom as a clear reference point, which moved from per-minute billing to flat plans with variable components layered on top. He expects SaaS to land somewhere similar: a platform fee that gives both customers and vendors predictability, paired with a variable component tied to the value the product delivers.
A shift like that makes pricing flexibility a practical need. Chargebee supports flat, usage-based, and hybrid pricing on one system — for media and software alike — so teams can evolve their model without rebuilding their billing stack each time it changes.
