when we started i invested everything i had + was working 7 days a week to make Fuse a reality.

if you don't back yourself, how can you expect anyone else to

I invested $1M to set up Fuse. Almost 100% of my liquid net worth.

When Charles and I set the company up, we made each other a commitment: if Fuse fails, both of us should get fcked. Properly. So we each invested nearly everything we had.

Trillion or bust.

Bad idea. The problem is that energy infrastructure will always have fixed costs (wires and pipes don't vanish when energy isn't flowing through them).

if fixed costs are recovered with usage-based charges, you create a lottery.

If usage is higher, profits are higher than they would've been if the charges were fixed.

if usage is lower, there's a risk variable payments don't cover fixed costs.

Energy companies will price this risk in as a premium... and bills will go up 😐

hunger is the key variable that explains success.

i've repeatedly regretted overindexing on intelligence when hiring.

never regretted hiring based on drive.

You can't overweight hunger when you're hiring.

Last year we hired an engineer who was weaker in system design.
What sold us was their red-eyed ambition and ownership.

1. Beat down our door. Operations interviews first, then engineering.
2. Asked for work before day one.
3. Often worked weekends.
4. Was interviewing candidates by month 3.
5. A year later, became engineering leader for our retail backend. Upcoming Ireland launch included.

Hunger sets your rate of improvement.
Everything else is the starting line.
