***EXCLUSIVE***

The United States may reconsider its position on Britain's claim to the Falkland Islands if it does not increase its defence spending, @Telegraph can reveal.

The extraordinary proposal is among a series of creative measures drawn up by senior Pentagon officials to incentivise Nato allies that fall short of the alliance’s 5pc spending pledge.

Britain will receive “special attention” in Washington’s review of whether allies have credible plans to hit the target, a senior US official told The Telegraph.

Officials believe that while Britain has the potential to be a leading defence partner, the Defence Investment Plan is not enough of a “step in the right direction”.

The measure is part of a wider effort by Donald Trump’s administration to push Nato into what officials are describing as a new era of the alliance, dubbed Nato 3.0.

As I reported earlier this week, there was no sign off, just a heads up it was coming.

It’s been brought to my attention by a WH official that President Trump was actually blindsided by the statement made about the Iran war the day after the election.

He didn’t approve the statement and no, he wasn’t happy about it, despite how it’s being presented to the public.

I’m told he was quite angry about it.

It’s very interesting how there’s an entire ecosystem of people who have been brought in to force you to believe he approves of a statement that undermines his agenda.

I don’t think it’s the last we will hear of it.
