🚨 STICKY WORDS Sunday 🚨

HOOP = HELP

~ 27% of High School possessions, have no paint touch and no reversal. ~67% have 0 ball reversals + 1 paint touch. MOVE THE NEEDLE ON THIS.

Quality 3PA = Catch and shoot 3PA.

Quality increases in 3 foot increments:

0-3 feet - CONTESTED
3-6 feet - SEMI CONTESTED
6 feet + - UNCONTESTED

The quality of 3PA's is LARGELY determined by how well you transition, and paint touch frequency. This means that it is a PAIRED ANALYTIC; heavy correlation with one or more stats.

HOOP = HELP
SPACE = SHOTS

No surprise that the 2 most analytically driven teams in the NBA, Boston and OKC, have done this better than anyone in the last 4 years. Both teams are also on the lower end of organized offense rate.

The simple teaching points at younger levels:

- less scheme = higher quality 3PA
- use one or two triggers that enable paints touches at higher %
- master transition/secondary transition

OKC is on 4 game win streak with an average victory of 13 PPG (8-2 overall).

All from within.

Brad Stevens level development/roster management from Daigs, which has come to be the norm.

Few worse fits in the NBA obviously. Lavine isn’t a 0.5 decision making guy that Daigneualt covets, isn’t a great defender and is inefficient. It’s actually crazy how many teams have learned this lesson the hard way.

OKC will do what they always do, develop the next man up and flip him for some draft capital.

There is a point in every coaches career where two things start to fade:

1. Learning and keeping up with innovation; studying other coaches.

2. Networking.

The only facet of coaching more important than these two things is relationship building.

This is simply a result of the income/success thermostat. If given a certain level of success or wealth, humans will naturally gravitate back to the mean - typically centered around how they were raised.

Every coach is guilty of this, but those that can recognize this in themselves find the ability to push past this plateau.

Spacing templates are the key. Chaos comes from poor spacing/single gaps - meaning one defender can guard two.

Structure, in the way Steph is describing, simply means spacing; it doesn’t mean choreography.

‘Structure’ comes from numbers and spacing advantages. Our brains process time sensitive information exponentially quicker this way.

Steph Curry wants less random basketball

On what Steve Kerr is installing:

“Less random basketball and offense. Trying to get more organized and more pattern-based.”

Chaos can create a shot

Structure makes EVERYBODY better

Have we been celebrating too much freestyle offense and not enough organization?
