Democratic Congressman Chris Pappas has won the US Senate race in New Hampshire, becoming the first openly gay man to be elected to the US Senate. He defeated Republican John E. Sununu in the November 3 elections. Pappas will take office in January 2027.

The development comes months after India witnessed a historic first of its own. In April 2026, Senior Advocate Menaka Guruswamy took oath as a Rajya Sabha MP, becoming India’s first openly queer Member of Parliament.

Guruswamy, who was among the lawyers instrumental in the legal battle against Section 377, entered Parliament as a Trinamool Congress representative from West Bengal.

Two milestones, separated by geography but connected by the question of representation, the presence of openly queer voices in the highest legislative institutions of the world’s two largest democracies.
