Jensen reveals he first met the Founder of TSMC by cold calling their number off Yellow Pages

"I heard about this company in Taiwan, TSMC and UMC at the time. They were of course quite poor companies themselves, and they were barely making it."

"TSMC was probably about $300 million, something like that. It's a tiny little company. I heard about Morris Chang. And so I tried to call their US office."

"Back in the old days there were yellow pages. I looked it up, TSMC. There's a number there. I called their number and it's a recording. I left my name and my number and said a few things about NVIDIA: we're a new startup company building computer graphics chips. I called several times. Nobody called me back."

"And so I finally wrote a letter to Morris Chang. Didn't hear anything for a long time, and then one day it was 6 o'clock or something, this person called and said 'this is Morris Chang from TSMC.'"

"And meanwhile, everybody outside my office was playing video games and they're all laughing and screaming. 'Hey shut up! It's Morris!' I was so happy that the founder would actually call us back, because hey, maybe we won't have to die."

"And so we talked and he invited me to Taiwan. I came back to Taiwan, and that was the start of everything. Not just that partnership, but just the whole industry."

Chamath on his infamous “below my line” moment: “If you believe it, you should never apologize.”

"I've probably been canceled or attempted to be canceled at least once in a really big way because of the show."

"The whole story was Jason was talking about human rights or something like that. And I essentially said something to the effect of stop virtue signaling because you nor anybody else in America are willing to actually make the substantive changes if you actually thought this was an issue.”

“So you say it's an issue, but your behavior betrays it being an issue. And as far as I'm concerned, it's below my line."

"That's the thing that became a meme, or there's a picture of me talking about the Uyghurs in China specifically. But I said the uncomfortable truth. Cause it's true. And I think it's very dangerous to say things matter when they don't matter.“

"And then the White House put out some comment on the Monday on Martin Luther King day, which I thought, this is crazy. This is intense.“

"I remember a friend of mine texted me and he sent me this study, which was when you look back at all of these moments online when you're in the public firing line, he said, if you believe it, you should never apologize. Never ever apologize, ever."

"I kind of stood my ground. And this is before cancel culture was canceled. So it was in the throes of it. And so I felt it on my skin and I realized this is not a way a sustainable society operates."

"But in hindsight, that's the greatest gift that I've gotten from the pod is that one moment, because it was like all these important things all at once that showed me where we were and where we needed to be."

"It's an enormous gift to know that you cannot be canceled. It allows me to be a little bit closer every day to my truer and truer self, because whenever I get afraid, I can go back to that moment and remember how it felt like, but then remember what the outcome was."
