Since you're really retiring, I wrote this letter for you.
Dear Leo,
Thank you for teaching me what love, compassion, and loyalty really mean. You showed me, without ever knowing it, what it looks like to stay loyal to something you love even when the world begins to doubt it.
You never talked too much. You rarely caused trouble, and you almost never complained in front of others. When people doubted you, you did not answer them with words. You answered with what you did. You kept going until you reached the place you are now.
You also showed me that kindness does not need an audience. You helped people without needing anyone to see. You gave without asking for anything back. And in the way you lived, you taught me something about faith: to keep God in every step, and to trust Him when the result is still unknown.
I saw it in the celebrations you offered to Him, in the tenderness with which you treated people, and in the goodness you carried through the years.
From the time I was a child until now, with a family of my own, you have been one of my inspirations. My idol. My role model. I did not even understand Spanish, and still I understood you.
I watched you fall. I watched people doubt you, criticize you, and say you would not make it. Then I watched you win everything you had fought for.
Now a chapter of that journey is ending.
You have given so much to your country, so much to football, and so much to the millions who love you, including me.
So when the spotlight fades, and the stadiums no longer call your name the way they used to, I have only one request.
Please keep being the Leo I have known since I was a child.
The Leo who is humble.
The Leo who is quiet.
The Leo who stays himself, no matter how many reasons the world gives him to change.
Please remain a good person. Not only today, and not only while the world is watching, but for the rest of your life.
To so many children, you were never only a footballer. You were a hero. I was one of them.
Thank you for being part of my childhood, and for staying with me through so many chapters of my life. Thank you for the memories I will carry even though you never knew I existed.
Enjoy this new chapter, Leo.
May God be with you, protect you and your family, and give you a happiness greater than any trophy you have won.
You will probably never read this. Still, I want you to know one thing: I love you, Lionel Andrés Messi Cuccittini.
I will always be grateful that I lived in the same era as you.
And isn’t it wonderful, Capitán, to be so clearly loved by God?
Te amamos, Capitán.
Thank you for everything. ❤️
