The rain chattered idly on the flat roof of the staffroom. Mr Brown guiltily stirred a teaspoon of sugar into his tea. Ms Fisher had gathered two hobnobs on a piece of paper towel.

“Have you heard about Tom Sherrington’s new thing?” Mr Brown asked Ms Fisher.

“What—the cartoon guy?” Ms Fisher replied.

“Yes,” said Mr Brown, “although I think he gets someone else to draw those.” He sipped his tea. “It’s ’oracy’. He’s teamed up with an outfit called ‘Voice 21’ to push it. The idea is that kids in private schools are taught to speak well and this gives them a huge advantage in life”.

“Oh, I thought that was because of the academic results, the resources, the connections, the motivated peers, the socioeconomic background of the students and those sorts of things,” Ms Fisher responded.

“Well, the idea is that oracy is important,” said Mr Brown.

“So is oracy what private schools do? Was Voice 21 established by a private school?” asked Ms Fisher.

“No, it was started by a failed free school experiment in East London.”

“Oh.” Ms Fisher contemplated this news. “So will we be telling kids to stop saying ‘we was’ and ‘innit’?”

Mr Brown looked shocked, “No! That would be outrageously snobbish! I think it’s more about doing group work or something.”

Ms Fisher bit into a hobnob and looked out of the window, hopeful that the rain might eventually clear.
