When the NTSB releases its report, we’ll find out what happened with the Learjet. A horrible, tragic accident.

In the meantime, a few things worth understanding:

1) General aviation (eg private planes) is substantially more dangerous than commercial aviation. On the order of 10x. Commercial airlines are VERY safe.

2) 70% of general aviation accidents are caused by “human factors” (aka pilot error), not catastrophic mechanical failures.

3) Part 135 (charter planes) has some very funky dynamics that can put pressure on pilots and lead to bad aeronautical decision-making.

I’m not saying that’s what happened here. I’m talking about it because I’ve seen it happen. And it’s so dangerous.

Think about it. You just paid $100K to fly somewhere. You may have guests you want to impress or at least don’t want to inconvenience. You don’t want to deal with TSA or delays. That’s why you’re flying private!

But there’s no airline between you and the pilots. If you throw a fit or even just express disappointment because you don’t want to wait or land short of your destination, they feel that pressure.

Flying private is like backcountry skiing. Flying commercial is like resort skiing.

The weather matters when you’re in the backcountry. The margin for error is smaller.

Know what you’re signing up for.
