🇵🇱 I am deeply saddened by the shooting in Kraków. My thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones, and with the emergency services working to help those affected.

I urge Belgians in the area to carefully follow the instructions of the local authorities. Anyone worried about Belgian relatives or friends, or any Belgian national in need of assistance, can contact our Embassy in Warsaw.

Belgia solidaryzuje się z Polską.

🌍 The World Bank has a crucial role to play at a time when conflicts are deepening poverty and international cooperation is under growing pressure.

Today, I discussed these challenges with @Bjerde_Anna, Managing Director of Operations at the @WorldBankGroup, with a particular focus on the Sahel.

From the Sahel and the DRC to Ukraine and the West Bank and Gaza, the World Bank must remain engaged where needs are greatest. We discussed the implementation of its new strategy on fragility, conflict and violence, with a strong focus on conflict prevention, stronger institutions and long-term stability.

I also welcomed Anna Bjerde’s leadership in making the World Bank more efficient and effective. Every euro invested should deliver tangible results for people on the ground.

Belgium remains firmly committed to a strong World Bank, with climate action, gender equality and inclusion at the heart of its work. These priorities are essential to making international cooperation deliver lasting results.

🇪🇺 It was a pleasure to meet today with @BNMarkussen, the EU’s new Special Representative for the Sahel.

The Sahel does not become less strategic simply because engagement has become more difficult. What happens in the region matters deeply to its people, but also has consequences for Europe. Our security, stability and prosperity are closely interconnected.

My recent visit to Burkina Faso and Niger strengthened my conviction that we must keep the channels of dialogue open, even when we disagree.

Belgium strongly supports the renewed EU approach built on mutual respect, honest dialogue and pragmatic cooperation. We must remain engaged, uphold our principles and work together on the challenges we share.
