How can we better integrate palliative care into heart failure management?🫀🧐

Palliative care is not just about end-of-life care. It is about improving quality of life, addressing symptoms, & supporting patients and their families throughout the heart failure journey.

It was a pleasure to moderate this HFA Fundamentals: HOW TO discussion with Emer Burke & @m4ggiesimpson , exploring how we can integrate early, patient-centred palliative care alongside guideline-directed heart failure therapies.

Cerebrovascular accident risk in survivors of head & neck cancer:
📍CVA risk after HNC treatment increases over time: ~10% at 10 years & 15% at 15 years
📍Radiation-related carotid injury + traditional CV risk factors + chemotherapy contribute to this risk
📍No clear “safe” carotid radiation dose has been established
📍Carotid stenosis ≥50% may affect ~25% of HNC survivors at 5 years post-RT
📍Think prevention early: ASCVD risk assessment, BP & lipid optimization, smoking cessation
📍Carotid US surveillance is an important part of long-term survivorship care
📍Multidisciplinary care matters, from oncology & #CardioOncology to vascular teams
