A player lining out for Leinster two weeks ago could face ~70% higher collision load in last night’s test for Ireland.

Something staff have to account for when planning the window, especially with just a week between tests to recover and still get enough contact work in.

International test rugby is generally more intense than club rugby, obviously.

But what does ‘more intense’ actually mean?

Ahead of the November internationals, @drpetertierney revisits his research using our collision metrics suite alongside our running data.

Going from club to international rugby:

📉Distance covered, high-speed running & sprint distance per minute actually decreases
📈 Collisions & Collision Load per minute increases
📈 Efforts per 100m of high metabolic load distance increases

What does that mean for players moving from club to country?

For clarity, this is not a ‘Run More, Win More’ post. We’ve already posted the longitudinal research on that.

This is about Brighton’s game model and high intensity running being central to it.

Running more than the opposition doesn’t guarantee a positive result. Their loss to Liverpool is an example of that.

But it does indicate that the players are carrying out the tactical demands placed on them by the manager.

Interestingly, over their 9 Premier League games:

When they cover MORE total distance than their opponents, they have an 80% win rate (4 wins from 5).

When they cover LESS total distance, that drops to 50% (2 wins from 4).

When they cover MORE sprinting distance, their win rate climbs to 83% (5 wins from 6).

When they cover LESS sprinting distance, it falls to just 33% (1 win from 3).
