Most IVF transfers in the U.S. now use techniques linked to an increased childhood cancer risk.

Not standard IVF itself, but common techniques called FET and ICSI, which make up at least 8 in 10 IVF transfers.

The risk is about 10-23 more cases per 100,000 kids per year. Standard IVF didn’t show a link.

One theory is that this happens during the freezing or thawing process, causing disruptions in how genes are turned on and off.

With ICSI, injecting the sperm skips the “natural competition” that could weed out bad sperm.

This is an observational study, so it can’t prove cause and effect, but this could still impact how doctors make decisions moving forward.

A 20-year study of a million children found that kids conceived by IVF frozen embryo transfer had double the cancer rate.

84% of US IVF transfers now use frozen embryos.

Danish researchers followed every child born in Denmark from 1996 to 2012 for up to 20 years. The study was published in JAMA last week.

Children conceived without assisted reproduction developed cancer at 18.3 per 100,000 per year.

After frozen embryo transfer, the rate was 41.1.

After ICSI, where a single sperm is injected directly into the egg, it was 27.9.

After frozen transfer, leukemia ran more than twice as high.

The only method that showed no increase was a fresh embryo, never frozen, created by placing eggs and sperm together in a dish.

That version is now the exception. In 2021, 84% of US IVF transfers used frozen embryos and 78% used ICSI, according to the CDC.

Compared with children of women with a history of infertility who conceived without treatment, the frozen embryo risk stayed at more than double.

In the authors' words, the results suggest "procedure-related, rather than infertility-related, factors." This is not the first time the pattern has shown up.

A 2019 JAMA study of the same Danish children at 11 years found it too. A 2022 study of 2.3 million children in Taiwan found those conceived through assisted reproduction had 58% higher cancer risk, "mainly owing to leukemia and hepatic tumor."

The absolute risk is small, and most of these children will never get cancer. The Danish children were conceived with older freezing methods, and the authors warn the results "may differ for contemporary protocols."

Nobody yet has long-term data on IVF as it is done today. Children conceived with today's methods won't have 20 years of data until the 2040s, so today's IVF children are, in effect, the trial.

Parents deserve to hear these numbers before they sign the consent form, because their child is the one who will carry the risk.

An experimental drug helped people lose almost half their body fat when added to semaglutide, with minimal loss of lean mass.

It’s called bimagrumab, and it blocks signals that limit muscle growth.

In a 72-week Phase 2 trial, the highest-dose of those two combined produced:

- 22.1% weight loss, vs. 15.7% with just semaglutide
- 45.7% reduction in body fat, vs. 27.8%
- 2.9% reduction in lean mass, vs. 7.4%

Around 92% of the weight lost with the semaglutide + bimagrumab combination was fat.

Everyone online is trying to lower their cortisol.

Yet cortisol, sometimes called the "stress hormone" is essential for life.

It affects almost every organ and tissue in your body. It helps your body:

+ respond to stress
+ reduce inflammation
+ control blood sugar and metabolism
+ control blood pressure

In 33 healthy adults sampled every 20 minutes, cortisol peaked around 8:30 in the morning and hit its lowest point just after midnight.

Too little of it is a disorder called adrenal insufficiency. The most common symptoms are fatigue, muscle weakness, loss of appetite, weight loss, and abdominal pain, plus low blood pressure that drops further when you stand up, causing dizziness or fainting.

The most common cause overall is suddenly stopping corticosteroids, such as prednisone, after taking them for a long time.

Doctors treat it with medicines that replace the hormone your body isn't making. With treatment, most people can have a normal, active life.

Chronic stress is a different story. Your adrenals will not, and cannot, simply wear out. Stress, in fact, makes your adrenal glands produce more cortisol, not less.

If you always feel tired, weak, or are losing weight, ask your doctor if you might have adrenal insufficiency.

Too much cortisol for too long is a problem. So is too little.
