Quick question @TimSweeneyEpic

Is the temporary spatial math module with XYZ gonna make it to UE6 or will everything be fully switched over to LUF?

What we are trying to do: Build an engine that’s more powerful than UE5, easier to develop in than Unity, and is the most efficient effective way to build with AI acceleration.

The problem with having old systems and new systems side-by-side is the tendency to mix them, and then their interoperability becomes a giant tangle of blueprints and verse, actors and entities.

We thought that side-by-side was unavoidable, but AI assisted conversion is now clearly way more effective, and will produce a way more manageable UE6 project than a hybrid, while making it way easier for us to simplify and improve the engine.

We’ll be proving it out by converting Fortnite, the game with the largest base of blueprints in existence, to the new approach.

"The imperial need for control is so desperate because it is so unnatural. Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle. Oppression is the mask of fear. Remember that. And know this: the day will come when all these skirmishes and battles — these moments of defiance — will have flooded the banks of the Empire’s authority. And then one single thing will break the siege."

Just to double check your position @TimSweeneyEpic

You are currently adjusting the EULA to give creators who use UE the ability to give permission to allow their games to be trained off. Thus permission being important factor in being trained on.

But later you say that according to the court cases you’ve looked at, it is okay to train off anything as long as the output is different?

Why change the EULA to be optional when training is allowed anyways?

This conflates a number of different things. Here is a breakdown of the separate components of what is happening -

- Does Epic let people use Fortnite IP without permission or compensation? No.

- Does Epic restrict AI training on outputs of Unreal Engine and MetaHuman? Yes currently but we are working to remove this restriction from EULA terms, though each game using these tools is released under terms of the developers’ choosing which can allow or restrict AI training.

- Do we allow training on content developed by others which we host in places such as Fab? This is up to each developer with the NoAI tag.

- What does the law say on the copyright issues associated with training on content? The Anthropic court ruling found they were liable for copyright infringement when torrenting pirated content (as the article quotes me on), but they found that the training itself was fair use. Other courts have found that whether particular content produced by AI was infringing dependent on its similarity to the copyrighted work.
